Duke and Johnson Earn BWAA Bowler of the Year Honors

Norm Duke and Liz Johnson have been chosen as the best bowlers of the calendar year 2009 by the Bowling Writers Association of America. For Duke, it is back-to-back crowns, as he also won in 2008, and it is his fourth overall (1994, 2000) Johnson’s 2009 award was her third, and her best performances are coming in odd years. She also won in 2005 and 2007.
In 2009, Duke won three professional titles, bringing his career total to 33. Johnson also won three times, capturing the PBA Women’s Viper Championship, and the USBC Queens. Duke won the PBA Dick Weber Open, and the Cheetah Championship. Together, Duke and Johnson won the 2009 PBA Don and Paula Carter Mixed Doubles Championship.
It was a stellar earnings year for both players. Duke earned $174,285 in event prize money, and in spite of not having a women’s tour to bowl in, Johnson earned a very respectable $88.000 in PBA and USBC competition.
BWAA began presenting the men’s award in 1942, and the women’s in 1948. The winners are chosen each year by active BWAA members using a point system based on performance. In 2009, the men’s race was very close, with Duke edging Wes Mallot 57-23. Johnson won the award handily over Kelly Kulick 105-43.

ARLINGTON, Texas – International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame Chairman Pat Ciniello has announced that the not-for-profit organization has eclipsed its capital fundraising goal of $1 million from the bowling community.

“We are lucky to serve in an industry that has so many generous individuals and organizations,” Ciniello said. “The bowling industry should take a bow as it really came through during this economic downturn by generating $1.1 million in donations and commitments. But we aren’t done yet.”

Ciniello expects to see additional contributions over the next few months. “There are other people and groups who would like to contribute to the building of the new IBM/HF,” he said. “Those who donate in excess of $5,000 will be permanently displayed in Arlington.” Ciniello added he hopes the Arlington community and local businesses will match the funds raised by the bowling industry.

A recent surge in donations by state Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America and United States Bowling Congress associations has complemented the $50,000 Diamond Level contributors. Those Diamond Level contributors are (in alphabetical order):

·    BPAA
·    Brunswick Billiard and Bowling
·    Bill and Barbara Chrisman, Storm Bowling Products
·    Pat and Lisa Ciniello, Bowland Centers

·    Daroll Frewing and Family, US Bowling Corp
·    Hans Krol and Nick Keppe, BowlTech
