McLEARY RE-ELECTED BWAA PRESIDENT
Hazel McLeary of Victoria, British Columbia was re-elected to a second one-year term as Bowling Writers Association of America president by the BWAA board during the annual convention June 23-28 in Las Vegas, Nev.
The Board also re-elected Dick Evans as vice president and Steve James as executive director, both for one-year terms. Additionally, Mike Hennessy, Bluffton, S.C.; Nancy Chapman, Green Bay, Wis.; Joan Feinblum, Santa Rosa, Calif., and Evans were re-elected for two-year terms. New board members elected for two years by the members are Joan Taylor-Schliewenz, E. Stroudburg, Pa., and Bill Zuben, Largo, Fla. Terms run from Aug. 1 through July 31.
Board members with one more year of service include Tom Clark, Muskego, Wis.; Jackie Wyckoff, Campbell, Calif.; Chris Beard, Gardnerville, Nev.; Bill Vint, East Troy, Wis.; Jim Goodwin, Rockwall, Texas; Kathleen Watson, Richmond, Calif.; Lyle Zikes, Arlington Heights, Ill., and McLeary.
More than 80 BWAA members attended Bowl Expo, IBPSIA and Coaches Summit activities at Mandalay Bay and 56 were on hand for the BWAA Annual Meeting where legislation was approved to reduce the size of the BWAA Board of Directors from 16 to 12 over the next two years, and to revamp the "old" BWAA and National Women Bowling Writers Awards programs by eliminating and/or renaming most awards.
The membership voted to continue its Bowler of the Year recognition program for male and female candidates in "professional," Amateur, Senior and Collegiate categories, and to add a new High School Bowlers of the Year category.
The former Mort Luby Sr. and NWBW Alberta E. Crowe awards will be combined into a new BWAA Hall of Fame Award, recognizing distinguished service in bowling journalism. The former John O. Martino and NWBW Jo Ettein Leiber Awards will become the BWAA Meritorious Service Award, recognizing an individual, business or organization for extraordinary contributions to bowling (BWAA members will also now become eligible for this award). The old BWAA Rip Van Winkle Award was eliminated, and a newly-announced grassroots communications award program sponsored by USBC will replace all of NWBW's former media awards.
The members voted to conduct the 2008 BWAA Convention the last week of June in conjunction with Bowl Expo in Orlando, Fla. Specific BWAA meeting dates will be determined soon.
Joan Romeo was presented with the Columbia 300 Remo Picchietti Humanitarian Award while another member, Len Nicholson, was awarded the Flowers for the Living.
James Buonaiuto of the Bronx, N.Y., who attends St. John's University, and high school graduate Patricia Pringle of Antioch, Ill. were recipients of $1,000 as the BWAA Chuck Pezzano Scholarship program selections. The announcement was made at the annual meeting.
Annual meeting minutes and a complete convention wrap-up will be available soon.
(President's Message) BWAA Members,
The first annual meeting of members of the new BWAA is now history! Thanks to all the members who made the effort to attend the meeting. I hope you enjoyed your experience.
We had a full day of meetings as we had a number of issues to deal with relative to the combined organization. Special thanks to the Awards Review Committee. They had a daunting task and are to be congratulated for listening to all the many opinions before making their recommendations which were approved by the members attending. Thanks also to the Special Project Committee for their review of the Pezzano Scholarship and the NWBW fund raising projects - International Hall of Fame & Museum and the Mail O Graphic Tournament. Their recommendations were also approved.
The Bowl Expo committee did an excellent job at the Bowling Writers Association of America booth. They raised $1100 for the Pezzano Scholarship fund and also signed up some new members. Thanks to all who participated and helped with the fundraising.
To those of you who attended our meeting, I would appreciate hearing from you about what you would like to have included at future meetings. If you did not attend, please let me know what would make you consider attending in the future.
The Bowling Proprietors Association of America had their most successful Bowl Expo ever. There was a record attendance and sell-out of booth space for the trade show. I hope those of you attending for the first time (there were many) enjoyed the Bowl Expo experience. It is where everyone involved in the game is present!
We are looking at a couple of new projects in the coming year and will update you when the plans are complete.
I will be appointing committees in the next few weeks and would like to hear from you if you have an interest in a particular committee.
I look forward to serving as your President for another year and hope to hear from you!
