MID-AMERICA WRITERS HONOR RAMIG, FALZONE
The Mid-America Bowling Writers honored John Falzone of Cherry Valley, Ill., as recipient of the organization’s Sam Weinstein Distinguished Service Award and Jerry Ramig of Clinton, Iowa, as their Golden Quill Award winner during their annual awards banquet following the USBC Masters telecast at Miller Park in Milwaukee, Wis., Oct. 28.

The MABW also honored Diandra Asbaty of Chicago and Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., as their 2006 Bowlers of the Year.

MABW’s annual banquet and celebrity roast, this year featuring PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, is a fund-raiser for charities MABW supports (the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame, Earl Anthony Memorial Scholarship Fund and BWAA Chuck Pezzano Scholarship Fund).

The “Sammy” is presented to the person who has distinguished him/herself by extraordinary devotion to bowling. The Golden Quill is presented to a journalist who has distinguished him/herself for excellence in reporting the sport of bowling.

Falzone began his career in bowling as a bowling center manager in the Rockford area. After a brief stint as administrative assistant for the American Bowling Congress in Milwaukee, he returned to Rockford to work with the Don Carter Lanes chain. In 1981, Falzone, John Sommer Jr. and Dave Lonsway formed a partnership in founding the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour (which later was renamed as the Professional Women’s Bowling Association). Falzone served as the tour’s administrative leader until it ceased operations in 2004.

Ramig began his bowling career in 1945. He began writing a bowling column for the Clinton Herald in 1953 and produced a weekly bowling show called “Sparetime” for radio station KROS for 17 years. The Iowa State Bowling Hall of Famer has been a member of the Bowling Writers Association of America for 30 years, serving as its president in 2006.

Asbaty won MABW’s Female Bowler of the Year honor for a record seventh time after winning the 2006 Team USA Women’s Championship, Malaysian Open and AMF World Cup in another exceptional year.

Weber won the Male Bowler of the Year title for the fourth time after posting 20 cashes, 16 top 32 finishes, four TV appearances, one title (the Etonic Championship) in Denny’s PBA Tour competition during calendar year 2006. He also finished second in Japan Cup and second in Denny’s PBA World Championship while earning $161,660.

California Bowling Writers
CALIFORNIA BOWLING WRITERS “VALENTINE SOLDIER CALL HOME DRIVE FOR 2008” KICK OFF

The California Bowling Writers (CBW) are conducting their fourth annual Phone Card Drive for the Troops. CBW had such a successful Drive in 2007, we decided the need was still very much there and the Drive will continue. We even got several responses back from troops serving in Iraq letting us know how much they appreciated the phone cards which even energizes our organization that much more to continue this Drive.

Last year the Phone Cards were sent for Valentine’s Day and we plan to repeat this for 2008. So, our campaign is called “Valentine Soldier Call Home Drive for 2008!”

NEW for this year’s Drive!!
  • For anyone wanting to donate $25, this will purchase one (1) Phone Card in your name and you can attach a personal note which we will include!
  • We have a direct contact with a source working in the military that will assist us in purchasing the best phone cards our money can buy as well as seeing the cards will get delivered to the troops on the frontline by Feb. 14, 2008.
We are reaching out again to all those who donated last year and invite you to be a part of this great campaign for CBW. We are asking for your donations NOW. Any amount is appreciated. Donations (made out to “CBW”).
